A third moving violation in 15 months adds a delayed suspension

A red light or stop sign is a hazardous moving violation. That means a fine of up to $400 and 3 TLC points.

Those points are separate from whatever the DMV puts on your chauffeur’s licence for the same light.

Camera tickets are different. A red light camera summons goes to the vehicle, not the driver, and carries no TLC points. But unpaid camera fines will block your licence renewal.

If an officer handed you the ticket, it is the kind that carries points.

Repeat violations

A third moving violation of any kind within 15 months brings a suspension, held off for 60 days. Finish the Vision Zero and Accessibility course inside that window and it is cancelled. Miss it and the suspension lands.

At 3 points each, two of these plus one phone ticket gets you to 6 points, which is where suspension starts.

Fight them early. The difference between 6 points and 3 points is the difference between working and not working.

Which case is which

One incident, two outcomes.

The DMV ticket goes to the Traffic Violations Bureau. An attorney can appear there as of right. Anyone else only if the judge allows it, so we do not take TVB cases.

The TLC summons goes to OATH, where a registered representative can appear for you. That is the case we take, and it is the one carrying your TLC points.

See the speeding and moving violations guide for the full split.

General information, not legal advice. Eternally Ready Alliance is not a law firm and Luigi Rojas is not an attorney; we act as a TLC industry registered representative before the OATH Hearings Division. Penalty amounts come from 35 RCNY Chapter 80 and can change, and the rulebook controls, not this page.

A photo of the summons or your licence is enough to start.
